The Lady and the Monster 1944 American Science-Fiction Horror Thriller "A millionaire's brain is preserved after his death, and telepathically begins to take control of those around him." A rather slow movie with some great sets. Typical B-movie lab with flashing lights and some kind of printer. How on earth Republic Pictures boss could think that Vera Hruba Ralston could have any kind of star quality to lead a movie is beyond me after seeing this movie. Erich von Stroheim gives it some depth as an obsessed professor, but it's not he who play the monster of the title. I've seen a later version of the same story called Donovan's Brain 1953 and I think I prefer that version. 5/10.

Cocaine Werewolf (2024)A cocaine-addicted stockbroker is bitten by a werewolf and becomes one himself, then goes on a killing spree. It's only when he snorts the nose candy that he turns into the monster. I've been tricked again, thinking this would be a somewhat enjoyable bad movie, but it was just too poor to enjoy. It's billed as a comedy horror, but was it funny? Nope, I didn't laugh once, not even so much as a chuckle. Is it good horror? Not in the least, with all the bad makeup and gore effects. Terrible acting, to boot. I don't mind a no-budget movie, but when it shows that it's so cheap then that's a turn-off. But then again, maybe it was done that way as part of the "charm". The only thing I did find amusing were some of the in-joke references to low budget horror filmmaking. Otherwise, a total bore. It's the kind of movie where you play on your phone while you watch it. 2/10

The Communion Girl (2022)Young folks are terrorized by the malevolent spirit of a little girl wearing a First Communion dress. This Spanish horror movie seemed to be on to something with a good idea, but the flimsy script and predicable jump scares keep it rising above mediocrity. What we're left with is a "creepy little ghost girl, looking like a rotted corpse, sneaking up on everybody." Translation; just another Ring wannabe. Some good atmosphere and well acted, but nothing more. I might have given this a slightly higher rating if it wasn't for the lousy, seemingly incomplete ending! 5/10

Clock (2023)After friends and family pressure her into having a baby, 37-year-old yuppie Ella makes the big decision but thinks her biological clock may be "broken" and in need of repair. She enrolls in a sinister clinic for treatment, but the radical therapy has some bad side effects. This is one of those horror movies you have to be patient with as it takes time to develop characters and set up the situations. And when the "good stuff" kicks in it makes you feel the wait was worth it. The scenes with the "tall woman" are especially creepy and unsettling. Director Alexis Jacknow use psychological horror as a seering indictment on undue societal pressures, as well as demonstrating the hardships and ordeals a woman goes through with pregnancy. Thought-provoking stuff, although the final shot is a noodle scratcher. 7/10

The Mad Magician 1954 directed by John Brahm, made in both 3-d and flat versions, I watched the latter. Been labeled as a horror movie but it isn't, it's more of a mystery movie where we now who the guilty one is and we just have to wait and see how they gonna catch him. Vincent Price plays an inventor of spectacular magic tricks, that he would like to use on stage himself, but hindered by an old contract he once signed. So he starts disposing those who are in his way in hideous ways that we don't see. Hiding in lookalike masks. Not too bad, but don't expect a horror movie. 6/10.

In A Violent Nature (2024)The theft of a locket brings back from the dead a man who was buried under the remains of a fire tower in the woods. The re-animated corpse wants the locket back and will slaughter anybody who crosses his path. I finally got to see this highly acclaimed Canadian slasher, now that it's available on Shudder. My expectations were high, but it wasn't exactly the horror masterpiece that I thought it was going to be. Still, I thought it was quite good. It was a different take on the tired subgenre, done in an artsy manner. Director Chris Nash demonstrates a knowing sense of style with some superb camera work, especially with the long tracking shots. Much of the narrative is told through the point-of-view from the killer, as the camera follows him from behind. Plus there is no music score at all. It's all these aspects that make this a refreshing change of pace from an already worn out subgenre. However, I found the ending to be somewhat disappointing. Oh, and how could I forget about the killing sequences. Extremely gory and wonderfully creative. Definitely will satisfy gore hounds. 7/10

Squirm (1976)Various species of worms attack a small Georgia town after they are forced above ground by power lines knocked down during a severe thunder storm. A fitting entry in the "nature versus man" subgenre of horror during the 70s. Often slow at times, but the payoff is worth it. With his directorial debut, Jeff Lieberman makes the most out of a very limited budget. The combination of using real worms with rubber ones comes of as mostly convincing, although a large amount of the fake worms sometimes looks like a huge pile of red spaghetti. But for the most part it works, and there some truly icky shock scenes. I especially like the occasional close-up of the worms displaying fang-like teeth and doing that unsettling screaming. 7/10

Der Student von Prag aka The Student from Prague 1913 German fantasy-romance-horror silent movie. Remember this movie being mentioned in my old horror movie books. Some has called this the first horror movie, but I guess there are other candidates that could be called that too. Penniless student Balduin makes a bargain with a mysterious man named Scapinelli to get rich. After saving a rich countess after a horse incident he falls in love with her and decides to make that bargain. He signs a contract, get loads of money, and the only thing Scapinelli want in return is something he can take from Balduin's student room. Scapinelli choses Balduin's mirror image... There is nothing in this movie that would scare anyone today. But some scenes are effective like Balduin's mirror image suddenly moving forward and walking out of the mirror frame, and in the final act when Baulduin is chased through the streets of old Prague seeing his image popping up everywhere. Between the scene with the mirror and the chase much time is spent on the romantic part of the story and that slows it down considerably, and some side characters are not fully explained what function they have to the story. Historic value is probably the reason to watch it, but it was interesting to have seen. 6/10.
