The Novelist's Film (Hong Sang-soo, 2022)
Of the three of his films I've seen by this director (the others being Woman is the Future of Man and Yourself and Yours), it is easily my favorite. I can see where it would frustrate many (though to be fair I could say that of all three) but I loved the flow of this film. Most of it takes place in one afternoon and follows a novelist having creative conversations with a bookstore owner, a director, an actor and a film student. This one really connected with me and I loved how it subtly (well, for some... for others it is outright stated) showed how all of them viewed the creative process. 8/10

Hotel (Jessica Hausner, 2004, Austria) Odd minimalist mystery/drama about a young woman working in a small Hotel near strange woodlands. Heavy on style and atmosphere, but the lack of much of a plot may be a little off-putting to those who need that kind of thing 8/10

I'm not familiar with this film or director. Me neither. It just appeared as half of a double-feature on Turner Classic Movies with another film from the same director called Wild Geese. There were a few moments where I thoughts its seriousness felt betrayed by a soundtrack that would have been served better by ambient silence, but overall it was pretty decent. It got progressively more serious too, though. It's a good first impression from a director with whom I'm unfamiliar. I'll say that.

Grass (Hong Sang-soo, 2018) Grass is easily the most fascinating of Hong Sang-soo's films I've seen thus far. On the surface level it's a movie about a person watching conversations and listening to their drama unfold. It's also arguably about how one tells stories and resolves them. It's also about trying to connect with others. It's possibly about the passage of time if the first shot and the last shots are to be believed and it is fascinating throughout. 9/10

I have a special fondness for movies that come across as plays, and I think in addition to being a nice little movie, it's also an excellent play. I wouldn't be surprised if it really was one and became adapted.

At just over an hour it can come off as a little slight, but there is so much going on.
