Seeing as there doesn't appear to be a single thread in the World Cinema section. Anybody have some recent watches?

A Hero - Ashgar Farhadi, 2020. Good drama. Farhadi back in Iran, after a couple of European films. It's on Amazon Prime.

It's a really good film that. But since it was released, one of Farhadi's students has accused him of plagiarism. He allegedly stole the entire plot from an essay the student had submitted!

I read about that. I am not sure what to think. One account that I read said that what the student made was a documentary about the true event that inspired the film. If that is true, it may be questionable to make a fictional movie about the same event without acknowledging the student’s contribution, but I don’t think it qualifies as plagiarism.

The student should have been credited somewhere though.

I don`t remember what it was called
but the last non-English speaking movie i watched in the cinema was a Swedish film back in 2001 at the Bergen internasjonale filmfestival.

I watched a Great British double-bill of 'Carry On Camping' (1969). and 'Carry On Abroad' (1972). In a land of patriotic and competitive (though supportive) national treasures on steroids, it delivered.

Mon Crime (The Crime Is Mine) – newest film by François Ozon. A delicious soufflé of a movie about an aspiring actress accused of killing a wealthy movie producer who attempted to Weinstein her. This is the 1930s, so neither public opinion nor the justice system is on her side. A very serious movie could have been made out of this premise, but this is not it. It’s a light comedy, almost a farce, with great dialogue and actors clearly having a blast (which is not to say that the issue of sexism is swept under the carpet).
I don’t think I had seen the two main actresses before (the one playing the actress and the one playing her best friend and roommate, a young female lawyer). In supporting roles you’ll find Fabrice Lucchini, Isabelle Huppert, Dany Boon and André Dussolier.

Brilliant performances. Lee Chang-dong's direction is outstanding. A masterpiece.

Leviathan (2014)
Oscar nominee for Best Foreign language Film in 2015. The pacing is a bit slow, but overall a good film.

Jeanne Dielman (1975)
Nearly 3.1/2 hours of a woman doing her household chores.....that flew by without a single moment of boredom.

Just finished watching this. Beautifully shot, if a little chaotic / brutally violent recollection of the NRA holding out the Sihang warehouse in 1937. Didn't really know anything about this, so it was quite remarkable to see the set up with the British / international community having "concession" territories set up in Shanghai directly across a river from where the Japanese were attempting to wipe out the last of the Chinese resistance.

A Story from Chikamatsu (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1954) - fantastic period drama (18th century maybe? Before the Meiji Restoration in any case) about an employee of a wealthy businessman who tries to do a favour for his master's wife, and it blows up on their faces.
