Torturing someone who's suspicious to make them believe they should trust what's happening to them?
Jack (Harry Styles) and his male friends wanted to live in a virtual world, fake city called Victory.
There is nothing wrong with that. But they kidnapped and imprisoned other people (mostly women) to live there with them without their knowledge or consent. That is illegal. Kidnapping and false imprisonment. (3rd degree murder for the death of the black woman.)
Jack's wife Alice (Florence Pugh) had a good life in the real world. She never agreed to live in Victory City. He never told her. She never had a choice.
When she realized what was going on, she told her husband she didn't want to live there anymore. He wouldn't let her leave. So she killed him in order to escape.
All the men knew what they were doing was wrong. Alice's friend Bunny (Olivia Wilde) knew it was a sham. But she wanted to live there. Because in the real world her children were dead. But in Victory City they were still alive. She could pretend to live a happy family life.
Frank (Chris Pine) was the leader of Victory City. His wife knew it was a sham. She was in on it, because they had power. But she blamed her husband when everything started falling apart because she didn't want to get arrested, prosecuted, convicted, and sent to prison in the real world for kidnapping and false imprisonment. That is why all the men were freaking out when Alice made her escape.
I don't know why you're explaining the plot to me. I understood it just fine and nothing I've said wpuld indicate otherwise. Those details I mentioned are still dumb in the context of this story.
