Oh yeah, I meant the only way I could see the character working if he’s just a guy in a mask. I’m kinda torn on Clayface the giant monster because I like the idea of a character able to imitate anyone, you could pull off some fun twists with that, but I generally like Batman without the paranormal. (Or if he is up against the paranormal, doing it as an X-Files, somewhat ambiguous kind of thing.) Not sure why that is, as I’m fine with Spider-Man, who has a similar rogues’ gallery, fighting the paranormal. Maybe it’s because Spidey has superpowers while Bats doesn’t. A faithful adaptation of The Long Halloween—followed by one of Dark Victory!—would be great, but they probably won’t do that any time soon. Scarecrow and Two-Face are good choices… Two-Face has been particularly ill served by the movies—I wonder if screenwriters just have trouble coming up with Two-Face stories? Hush would work, except that as sdrew13163 pointed out this universe’s Riddler basically is Hush. I feel the same way. Foes like Clayface or Killer Croc don’t appeal to me at all as Batman villains. Batman works better with outlandish but powerless villains. Although I do make an exception for Poison Ivy (and Mr Freeze, if he counts as being superpowered). She’d be pretty goofy in live action- and would not work in the Reeves series- but I’m hoping they use her in the new James Gunn DCU series. Now that makes me want to see a grounded Nolan-esque take on Ivy. Just to see it in all its absurd glory. I like Ivy and Mr. Freeze too, by the way, but a large part of that is probably because the animated series did both characters so well.

I think a shape shifting villain could potentially work really well in a dark sci fi mystery. But… the first movie didn’t even remotely set up the possibility of any fantastical elements so it would be pretty jarring to suddenly have them. I think I could get on board with the original version though. (Btw, Clayface’s first name was taken from Basil Rathbone!) Obviously I'm very much accustomed to his metahuman rogues gallery by now, but I just see that as a tribute to the occult detective fiction of yesteryear. Which, if they really embraced the sci-fi and horror elements like an old-school Lovecraftian Weird Tales narrative, I think a Batman movie with Clayface or even a villain like Man-Bat would be awesome.

Yeah, but it’s exactly because the movies borrow little details like that that there probably won’t be a faithful live-action Long Halloween adaptation. Which is too bad because it’s a better framework for a Batman story than what most of these screenwriters have come up with. One of my criticisms of The Batman was how it presents, even trumpets, itself as a mystery and then doesn’t work at all as a mystery.

The strike better not delay this. I NEED IT NOW…. or, at least, SOON!

“…Filming on the highly anticipated DC outing The Batman Part II has now been delayed to 2024, and will no longer commence this November as originally planned. As revealed in a report by Midgard Times, The Batman sequel instead will not go before cameras until March next year with the delay likely being caused by the ongoing writers strike. A strike that both director and writer Matt Reeves and his fellow writer Mattson Tomlin have been directly involved in. The pair were recently seen joining the picket line alongside the rest of the WGA, who are calling for better pay and working conditions.” movieweb.com/matt-reeves-working-on-the-batman-2/

A new report says they’re looking at either Joel Egerton or Josh Hartnett to play Harvey Dent.

Some turkey on here was saying that The Batman sequel would be the last installment of this particular Batman. Yeah right. If Michael Keaton’s Batman couldn’t ensure a hit then you know that DC aren’t going to mess with a formula that seems to be working. The Batman and Joker sequels are the likelier box office successes from now.

I had speculated that Gunn will want it to stop at 2 for obvious reasons and he may eventually have the power to do that IF his universe catches on. But now that Mushetti is doing Gunn’s Batman I doubt it will be anywhere near as well received as Reeves. I’m thinking more and more that Gunn’s new reboots will crash and burn. And assuming the numbers for Part II are good a third should be safe.

Hell, I’m still hoping they go for three and give Keaton a solo movie to close out the Burtonverse.
