A few of my favorites:
In John Ford's The Searchers (1956) the desert provides much adversity for Wayne and Hunter as they trek through winter and summer to find their lost girl.
Victor Sjöström's The Wind (1928) creates a beautiful, semi-mythical tale out of the desert landscape with a lot of help from Lillian Gish (and the wind).
The mountainous desert landscape in John Huston's The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) becomes a character in the narrative as the men mine for its gold.
Philip Noyce's Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) tells the heartbreaking story of three Australian aboriginal girls crossing 1500 miles of the Outback desert to return to their true home.

"Two city-bred siblings are stranded in the Australian Outback, where they learn to survive with the aid of an Aboriginal boy on his "walkabout": a ritual separation from his tribe.

Greed (1924) "John McTeague was a slow, simple man who became a dentist after working at the Big Dipper Gold Mine. He is now being hunted in Death Valley by his ex-best friend Marcus and the law, His lot was cast the day that he meet his future wife Trina in his office.... "

A couple of plane crash movies. Both 1965. Sands of the Kalahari. The one where the stranded party is attacked by rampaging baboons. Good times. The Flight Of The Phoenix.

I've always had a soft spot for these two escapist extravaganzas, each exploiting the mystery and romance of the desert in its own way: The Garden of Allah - "There in the solitudes, you may find yourself."A monk searching for his lost faith and a devout woman searching for direction in life find each other. Legend of the Lost - "One gets to imagine strange things in the desert."A hunt for treasure that may very well be mythical.

A hidden gem that features Anthony Quinn again playing an Arab leader taking up arms in the early 20th century. In this case, 1920s Libya against Italian Fascists.

"Three outlaws fleeing a posse through the desert come upon a dying woman and her baby in a wagon. Before she passes away, she makes the men promise to take care of her baby and get it safely through the desert." 1916 1936 1948

One of my favorite 'lazy afternoon' type of movies.
Guess I was too lazy to remember it.

I wonder if anyone else here remembers the movie SOLE SURVIVOR. It’s a 1970 TV Movie (sorry). It involves the wreckage of an WWII Allied bomber plane that was thought to have been lost in the Mediterranean Sea but was discovered in the African desert. It’s a mystery that includes flashbacks to the survivors of the flight pondering their fate in the desert. There is a huge twist, however. It’s like a Twilight Zone episode. The cast includes William Shatner, Richard Basehart and Vince Edwards. I saw it once when it originally aired and have never seen int again, a story shared by many viewers online. It’s kind of a unicorn.
