I love character actors! Films wouldn't be the same without them. Here are just a few of my favorites out of hundreds: S. Z. Sakall.
Here with Bogart in CASABLANCA. I think my favorite of his performances is a toss-up between IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME and CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT.
Jane Darwell, as Ma Joad in THE GRAPES OF WRATH, my absolute favorite of all her performances. Arthur O'Connell, with Rosalind Russell in PICNIC, my favorite of his many wonderful performances. Mary Wickes, who held her own with all the great stars in the classic era and continued on into the '90s. My favorite out of many of her performances is probably THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER. Walter Brennan, a giant, here with Brandon de Wilde in GOODBYE, MY LADY. I think one of my favorites out of all his amazing performances is in MEET JOHN DOE. "The Helots have got you. The Helots have got you." I'll never forget the magic of that.

Movie goers knew Gladys Cooper as an older woman in movies like Now, Voyager... ...but she had a long career in the British theatre before Hollywood. She remained beautiful into her old age. She and Bette Davis were longtime friends. My Fair Lady With Robert Redford in the Twilight Zone: Nothing in the Dark Song of Bernadette

PaulsLaugh & @longtallsally - Just a biographical note about two great players you've mentioned: Gladys Cooper was Robert Morley's mother-in-law. How appropriate they're listed here one after the other. Saw them together on a talk show in the late 60's or thereabouts, and although Cooper insisted that nothing Morley ever said could be relied upon and treated him with equal parts exasperation and indulgence, it was clear they adored one another, and their mutually wicked teasing was part of a delightful game they played.

Gladys George The young Gladys, unlike her later screen image, in Chickens (1921). Her birth date was variously given as 1900 or 1904. "He used to be a big shot." The Roaring Twenties (1939) Her most famous role as the hard-edged chanteuse with a deep sense of melancholy and unrequited love for gangster Cagney. The Hard Way (1943), with Ida Lupino. Much of her life mirrored what we saw on the screen.
