Are you mechanical at all?
Ours was acting up.........turned out it had frozen up because the drain tube was plugged.

That's sucks. Mine conked out in June a few years ago, I had to get a totally new unit, went nearly a week without it. It cost me nearly 5 grand, but the worst part, by far, was no AC for 6 days.
I hope you'll have an easy fix and be cool again soon.

Probably just old. If they can’t fix it today, they’ll bring in one of portable units. The last they had to do that, it about frozen me out. |

One thing she could try is flip the breaker to the AC. That's a trick I learned from a repairman I know, saved me hundreds over the years. |

I'd run to Walmart or Home Depot and fork over the $200 just to get a basic window unit and stave off the heat a little bit in the meantime

If it has ice built up on the coils inside the house..........you gotta give it a little time to melt before turning it back on, as well

I don't have AC, but I usually don't mind the heat. I open the windows at night and close them during the day, and it usually stays comfortable. Although it's going to be like 103 today, so that's getting a bit warm, even if it is dry heat. I hope you have somewhere to go if it's getting too warm for you. Don't take any chances.

But in the meantime, I invested $300 into one of those portable AC units on wheels. I just dragged that from room to room with me. |

There's the big difference.......... here it gets to 75-95% humidity and even 65 Degrees feels muggy and steamy as hell

I’m a renter, so the landlord has to fix it, get me temporary unit, or put me in hotel. I’ve already spent a week in one when a pipe burst upstairs and flooded my apartment. The ceiling collapsed and poured out like Niagara Falls. |

I am glad to hear it.
About 3 (4?) years ago in June, I had my shop AC unit go out and had 4 different repair places take a look and all recommended replacing it (it was 14 years old and a cheapo brand). They varied from $7000 for a "house" brand to $8200 for a name brand.
One company was really honest and said "the reason why it's so expensive is because it's the summer rush. If you could wait it out, I would bet by October it's half this price." I was like HMMMMM...
So I paid $400 for a portable window unit here like mikemonger did and just pulled it every night so I could secure the window and then put it back in every morning. Did that for 4 months in the sweltering Virginia humidity.
Come late September, the tech returned with a manager and said "we have the time and guys just waiting for work so how about we get you a brand new Lennox system for $4700 installed." Lennox is supposed to be a really good brand.
I was like sold!
For this frugal guy, that was totally worth it lol
What's really insane is my power bill in the summer dropped from $400 per month which I thought was NORMAL to about $150 per month.
Getting a more expensive but high efficiency AC unit apparently does save money in the long run.
