From Digby’s Hullabaloo In the closed-door meeting, several GOP members…… urged Rep. Jim Jordan… … to drop his bid for the speakership, but he is resisting those calls, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Jordan, who sources say scrapped a third vote today after failing to get enough to win the speakership in his first two ballots… … is is now leaning toward backing a resolution… … to expand interim Speaker Patrick McHenry’s powers… … sources said, but he wants to see how today’s House GOP conference meeting goes. At one point, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz…
…who led the effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker, was told to sit down by McCarthy but refused.
Illinois Rep Mike Bost then “got all emotional and ugly and was cussing him” and “telling him it’s all his fault,” one member said…… calling him “self-serving.” Some members encouraged him to drop out of the race. Exiting the meeting, Wisconsin Rep. Mike Gallagher said he was “going to the chapel to pray the rosary.” “ Temperatures are really high in there,” a deflated-looking Gallagher said. The word is that is when McCarthy…
…told Matt Gaetz to sit down and shut up when he tried to speak.
And Marge and the gang are not happy.
Not one bit.
Unfortunately, it appears that hiring a temp Speaker, presumably Patrick McHenry,
in order to avoid blowing up the country, isn’t going down well with a huge number of Jordan’s henchmen.
So the talking heads on cable news are now all floating the the idea that it’s up to the…
Democrats to vote for this far right wing Republican to save the country from the Republicans.
What the hell is happening here?

Didn't Gaetz want to shut down the government?

I protest the association of noble horror clowns with the airheaded twats of the Repub party. Hypocritically, I also protest leaving out Harley Quinn.

Democrats should have never went along with extreme "right winger" Matt Gaetz and his plan to topple anyone who disagrees with him. That was an awful idea, and would have been a perfect time to give Gaetz a big FU.
However, McHenry seems to be the guy many are finally getting behind. If the vote comes up I'm hoping Democrats help him. It would be the right thing for the country right now.

I'll take that any day over a party that marches in lockstep.

He might be right, I'll give him that, but this routine of claiming to be small government when out of power is not fooling me.

Didn't Gaetz want to shut down the government? No. He didn't want another Omnibus Bill. He wanted a budget, like the US had up until the 90's. The congressional leaders go behind closed doors with lobbyists and produce a bill full of spending, a little something for everyone who wants some, and tells Congress "Vote for it". If they don't then the media story is "That guy wants to shut down the government, he is trying to veterans and orphans from getting medical benefits!!!"

He might be right, I'll give him that, but this routine of claiming to be small government when out of power is not fooling me. We can't get back to small government while operating without a budget. Members of the House need to vote on items, and there be a give and take process, not '"Here is a bill, vote up or down for the whole thing".

McCarthy didn't keep his word when he gave it. So they should have supported him anyway? How about a half dozen of those Republicans who didn't like McCarthy voting for Jeffries?

He was sending out fundraising messages while he was removing McCarthy. Not to mention the bad blood goes back to McCarthy not shutting down the investigation into the sex charges against Gaetz.

The way campaigning is conducted needs to change, no doubt about that, but until we can get publicly funded elections everyone running for office is locked into fundraising. Gaetz too. The charges were bullshit and McCarthy should shut them down. Gaetz gets a ton of bad publicity and has a lot of enemies in Congress because his attempts to stop continuing resolution bills would make a lot of gravy trains run less smoothly.
