The European champions Manchester City and the South American champions Fluminense have a bye to the semifinals.
Leon (Mexico), Urawa Reds Diamonds (Japan), Al Ahly (Egypt), and Auckland City (New Zealand) are the representatives from Central/North America, Asia, Africa and Oceania respectively. Al-Ittihad gets an invitation as the champions of the host nation.
Final is on Friday Dec 22nd.
The last time a team from outside Europe won the tournament was in 2012, when Corinthians (Brazil) beat Chelsea.

Al Ittihad beat Auckland 3-0. I was going to make some derogatory comment about Auckland losing to a Saudi team but then I thought I'd check if that's not C Ronaldo's team. It isn't, but they do have Benzema in the squad.

When I typed in their name, spellcheck changed it to Unaware Red Diamonds! Maybe not a good omen.

Fluminense from Rio de Janeiro beats the African Champions Al-Ahly from Egypt 2-0 to advance to the finals, most likely against Manchester City, unless the Asian Champions from Japan can pull off a minor miracle.

It seems that Fluminense went ahead with a goal from a non-existent penalty, and then John Kennedy closed the deal with a second one in added time.

No surprise on the other semi-final as Manchester City beats the Asian Champions 3-0 to advance to the Friday final against Fluminense.
It will be a first-time win for either team, although Pep Guardiola has won it three times (twice with Barcelona and once with Bayern Munich).
I wonder what odds the British bookmakers are giving. Carl LaFong ?

Betting:
City: 1/8 Flu: 6/1
So City about 86%, Flu 14%.
Flu probably worth a bet.
City can’t win a game in the league.
