The vast majority of home schooled kids do fine I seriously doubt that. How many parents do you think can prove Pythagoras's Theorem and explain the Theory of Relativity and are knowledgeable in geography and world history and can conjugate a verb and explain its tenses and can teach sports skills etc etc. Bottom line: home schooling is useless and produces highly ignorant children. They do better on standardized tests, are more likely to go on to colleges, and more likely to graduate from colleges. In the US a lot of public schools are warehouses for budding young criminals, teachers are trying to manage these zoos and fill out paperwork mandated by state politicians, they don't spend much time teaching. Kids don't learn shit, unless it's about sex, drugs, social justice and rap music.

Are you saying a private school would be superior to my old public district?

Are you saying a private school would be superior to my old public district? I said "a lot of" and not "all". Some people are trapped, the local school is a zoo, they don't have money for private schools or private tutors, and homeschooling is the only option. My mom was a public school teacher for years, and later a principal. She spent years blaming a lack of funding for most of public educations problems, but now even she has admitted that awful parents and their awful kids are whats ruined American public education. Its not Republicans are racism or any of that. Its that the schools are full of semi- feral children who have parents who don't give a fuck. There is no way in hell Id ever agree to force parents who care to send their children into that world of shit. To hell with Pythagoras.

I disagree. Who else is going to protect children from abusive parents? It is a case of extreme neglect and irresponsiblility of the neighbors who stated on TV that they rarely saw the children. And when they did, the kids were skinny, sun deprived, and only outside at night. No, it was not legal obligation. But morally, the neighbors should have either called the police, or Child Protective Services, and reported extremely suspicious behavior. Child Protective Services is a bunch of pedophiles, just like Blackwater. How come it doesn’t occur to anyone that your first instinct shouldn’t be to tattle tale to the grown ups? See that’s what’s wrong with public school. This isn’t Uncle Joe Stalin’s Communist States Of America. You don’t get party credit for ratting on your neighbor to Big Brother. How about talking to the parents first? Certainly they can talk to the parents first. But often (especially in a case like this) if the parents are guilty of torturing their children, talking to the parents won't do any good. It may even make things worse. So calling a governmental agency that has the power to rescue the children maybe the only effective option.

Most people are aware of these parents being arrested for torturing their children in California. People are now talking about how to avoid this happening in the future. Some people at talking about mandatory regulations for home schooled kids. And mandatory state checks. www.newsweek.com/california-parents-accused-torturing-13-children-dressed-kids-alike-future-789364I think the neighbors should have noticed these kids were super white, really skinny, and nobody ever saw them during the day. Somebody should have called authorities (police, child welfare, etc.) and asked that they be checked out. Just to make sure everything was okay. We don't need anymore unnecessary regulations or mandatory invasion of privacy by the state. What do you think? I think that description fits everyone on my block and just about everyone in my home town. People don't spend much time outside during the Autumn and Winter months. Home schooling does need more regulation because it has turned into a free pass for not educating children at all. Which creates a large population of people who end up on welfare or in prison because they were never given the proper instruction needed to get by in modern society. Which adds to the already increasing number of those who cannot work because they are injured or in too poor health to work a job. Bottom line is that "if you see something, say something" doesn't work because the public can't reliably determine what "something" is because they don't know what to look for. So it only adds to the number of false leads which hopelessly obfuscates effective attempts from law enforcement to stop crime. Maybe not where you live. But half the country does spend most of the year outside. Southern California where this family was living has good weather all year round.

In the States home schooled kids on average do better on tests than public school kids do. Fair enough. I'm very surprised about that.

Kid has to have Aspergers syndrome Definitely something. The father in the audience looked the same. Maybe that's why they home-schooled him, to avoid nasty children. Might have been for the best in this case.

How many parents do you think can prove Pythagoras's Theorem and explain the Theory of Relativity and are knowledgeable in geography and world history and can conjugate a verb and explain its tenses and can teach sports skills etc etc. Probably not a majority of them. Because they were educated in public schools. Chicken or the egg, my friend?

I came home from school having learned that we have seasons due to the Earth's tilt on its axis. When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun it is hot because we are closer to the sun. I relayed this new found knowledge to my father. He cussed out loud and stomped off. He came back a minute later with a globe, a lantern and a bottle of gin. He used the globe and lantern to set up a little model to show me how seasons were the result of the radiant energy each hemisphere received and had little to do with the relative distances involved. Then he drank the gin.

If that's what the teacher taught you, he was an idiot. Your father was right. Astronomy was my hobby for a long time. It is all about the tilt of the Earth's axis,yo Most people believe that the temperature changes because the Earth is closer to the sun in summer and farther from the sun in winter. In fact... the Earth is farthest from the sun in July and is closest to the sun in January! During the summer, the sun's rays hit the Earth at a steep angle. The light does not spread out as much, thus increasing the amount of energy hitting any given spot. Also, the long daylight hours allow the Earth plenty of time to reach warm temperatures. During the winter, the sun's rays hit the Earth at a shallow angle. These rays are more spread out, which minimizes the amount of energy that hits any given spot. Also, the long nights and short days prevent the Earth from warming up. Thus, we have winter basically focusing the solar radiation with the atmosphere is why its hot in the summer. An interesting read sites.gsu.edu/geog1112/solar-radiation-seasons/Ever notice when you are laying on your back on the beach and you feel that heat on your skin ? that isnt just because its hot out- thats all those focused rays.
