The nuns are counting off who they have hit up for contributions: Mother Maria: The Lions. Sister Gertrude: Ya. Mother Maria: The Elks. Sister Gertrude: Ya. Mother Maria: The Order of Moose. Sister Gertrude: Ya. Mother Maria: Kiwani's, what kind of animal is that? Sister Gertrude: American. This memory makes me laugh when I see a sign saying there is Kiwanis in the town

Daniel-san, must talk. Walk on road, hm? Walk right side, safe. Walk left side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later your get squished just like grape. Here, karate, same thing. Either you karate do "yes" or karate do "no." You karate do "guess so," you squished just like grape. Understand? Miyagi and Yoda would get along great.

Del: You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get. Gotta admire Del. It's a wonderful thing to be happy with who you are and unapologetic about it. Lotta the world's problems are caused by people who aren't but think they'll fix it by making it someone else's problem. Unless they're just assholes. A lot of them walking around feeling just great about being one. Might be wonderful for them, but it sure messes things up for everyone else and I wish we knew what to do about that.

That sounds so comforting in a "Be it ever so humble" and all that kind of way, but I'll wager there are many who could follow it with a heavy sigh and a sincere, "Thank goodness." There's at least one aphorism dispensed toward the end of that film that's never sat quite right with me: "And remember, my sentimental friend, that a heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others." There are too many examples of people who are loved by millions, yet are absolute scum. I get what he's trying to say; he's reminding the Scarecrow what a nice, caring guy he is. But "how much you love" is about kindness and generosity with no expectation of reward. "How much you are loved by others" is about only the reward. I'm not entirely sure about the "If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any farther than my own back yard" one, either.

Doghouse6, surely you mean the Tin Man rather than the Scarecrow.

Of course it's true, and all well and good for people whose goal isn't power itself, but nevertheless find themselves in possession of it. It's the ones who want it for its own sake (or even worse, also want it to shield them from responsibility) that we have to worry about. I apologize if some of my recent replies have sounded cynical and bitter. It's getting late in the day and I've been watching and reading news. Almost always has that effect on me.

“You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I can't understand what's gone wrong with it.” - George (Jack) in EASY RIDER A quote more timely now than ever.

“You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I can't understand what's gone wrong with it.” - George (Jack) in EASY RIDER A quote more timely now than ever. More timely, indeed. And what's really confounding is that you can quote George to anyone across the political spectrum and they'll wholeheartedly agree, but will have entirely opposing ideas of "what's gone wrong" at each end.

SO true! And it’s probably a quote applicable to every country on Earth. Well, maybe not Finland.
