movieliker You are one of the first L&O fans I’ve met that likes Serena - she’s my least favorite prosecutor on the show, she was wooden and whiny IMO. Connie is arguably my favorite female lawyer on the show. Like you say, different preferences for different people. The show did have some cliches, and I agree with you about how the judge suppressing evidence due to some technicality has been overused a lot, I don’t really agree with you about the rest. Yes they sometimes had dramatic courtroom moments where it seemed like the witnesses weren’t prepared, but I give them a pass for that, it’s just for dramatic effect. Everybody is different. With different opinions and preferences. Serena was my second favorite ADA. After Carey Lowell (Jamie Ross). Connie Rubirosa is one of my least favorite. Fascinating. I liked all of the second chair ADAs except for Serena and Borgia. I love Rubirosa, but I’m not a fan of Mike Cutter in those later years. Who are your favorite detectives? Briscoe/Green is by far my favorite detective pairing, they were awesome. I liked most of the detectives, the exceptions being beauty queen Cassady in season 17 and Rey Curtis a lot of the time, Cassady was just bland and inept and Curtis was a self righteous jackass.

But he had the unenviable task of replacing Briscoe, no one could live up to that.

I think Cassady was disliked because she was bland and rather inept - she came off as clueless at times. The writing was at its worst in season 17 IMO, and it showed with Cassady. I like Mike Logan (Chris Noth) a lot. Not at all a fan of Rey Curtis (Benjamin Bratt).

I liked Paul Sorvino too.

I liked Paul Sorvino too. I think that’s what made her a poor character - it wasn’t a good idea to bring on someone who wasn’t prepared to be a homicide detective. It made her difficult to watch. I also like Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) - he’s an underrated character, the episodes before Briscoe tend to get forgotten about but I thought Cerreta/Logan were a good detective pairing and season 2 was a great season.

Abbie Carmichael was cool. But she was too tenacious. I remember one episode where she went after this little girl who murdered the prison guard who raped her. The detectives and even McCoy were asking her why she was coming down so hard on this young lady. She had no sympathy, empathy, or compassion for suspects. She just wanted to crucify everybody. A good ADA has a good balance of wanting to convict the guilty. And compassion for those otherwise good people who just make a mistake. Carmichael didn't have that balance.

I agree that Carmichael was too harsh sometimes, and yeah it especially showed in that season 9 episode where the corrupt prison guard was murdered, she had no sympathy for the young woman who orchestrated it even though she was being threatened and abused by the guard. She was the harshest of the prosecutors, but I thought she was pretty good overall. I disliked Serena because of how soft she was - she didn’t seem to be cold enough to be an effective prosecutor. The episode that sealed my dislike of Serena was the season 13 finale, with the pedophile comedian, where the parents let the comedian rape their son in exchange for money that they used to pay for medical treatment for their other son. Those parents were disgusting human scum, and yet Serena acted like it was some tragedy that they were going to prison at the end, that really pissed me off, those parents deserved to rot.

I'll have to go back and watch that episode. Before I reply. I'm out of town now on a country Labor Day holiday. I vaguely remember. But --- I don't remember Serena taking a controversial stance.

Serena acted like it was sad at the end that the parents were going to prison and that the son that was sick would be without them, to which Jack replied “he’s better off”. Jack was right, those parents were complete garbage and I have no idea why Serena acted like it was some tragedy that they were getting locked up.

I don't agree with you. There are usually two sides to the story. She had sympathy for the parents, and the predicament they were in. Yeah, she was wrong. And Jack was correct. But she has the right to voice her opinion. And in the end, she did her job and helped convict the parents and molesting celebrity.

Having sympathy for sick fucks who let a pedo pay them to rape their son was just a major turn off to me for Serena. Those people were irredeemable trash.
