I've got 3 days of cricket coming up this summer:
England v Pakistan. T20 - should be exciting! England v West Indies. England v Sri Lanka.

Glamorgan captain Sam Northeast hit the highest first-class score recorded at Lord's as he made an unbeaten 335 against Middlesex on day two of the new County Championship season. Northeast, 34, overtook Graham Gooch's 333 for England against India in 1990. The Englishman put on an unbeaten stand of 299 with Colin Ingram (132 not out) in Glamorgan's total of 620-3 declared. Northeast's innings is also the highest Championship score ever recorded in April. Having come to the crease on Friday morning with Glamorgan's score at 16-1, Northeast faced 412 balls, hitting 36 fours and six sixes. He put on 129 with Billy Root (67) for the second wicket and 176 with Kiran Carlson (77) for the third wicket... www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/68749184

Slats’ punditry career is over. www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/apr/15/michael-slater-charged-domestic-violence-offences-assault-stalkingThe former Australian Test cricketer Michael Slater has been remanded in police custody after being charged with more than a dozen offences. Slater, 54, had his case mentioned in Maroochydore magistrates court on Monday. He is facing 19 charges relating to alleged offences perpetrated on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on various dates between 5 December 2023 and 12 April. The charges include domestic violence offences of unlawful stalking or intimidation, breaking into a dwelling with intent at night, common assault, assault occasioning bodily harm and choking or suffocation. Can’t say I was a fan of his work on the radio or TV.

But now it seems he has made things even more difficult for himself and might never get involved cricket ever again. Also, he might have some jail time.

Deadly is dead. Derek Underwood, England’s greatest spin bowler, dies aged 78 Derek Underwood, the most prolific spin bowler in England’s Test history, has died at the age of 78, his former county Kent have announced. Underwood, affectionately known as “Deadly”, claimed 297 scalps in 86 Test appearances for his country with his brisk left-arm spin, as well as another 32 in one-day internationals. Known as a master of uncovered pitches, he first played for his country as a 21-year-old in 1966 and made his final appearance in 1982. His record tally would have been even higher had it not been for his decision to play in Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket and the first rebel tour of South Africa, but he still sits 42 wickets ahead of his nearest rival among spinners, Graeme Swann. A statement from Kent read: “Kent Cricket is in mourning following the death of one of the icons of the Club, Derek Underwood, at the age of 78. The thoughts of everyone at Kent Cricket are with Derek’s friends and family at this sad time.” RIP www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/apr/15/derek-underwood-outstanding-england-cricket-spinner-dies-aged-78

One of the great characters (villains from an Aussie point of view) of the 70s. Was a skilled off spinner and genuine match winner on a pitch offering any assistance. And Swann's been the only good spinner England have had since.

The IPL is rocking this year, and none of you guys are talking about it? I’m watching from afar - and to be fair, it’s been a pretty ordinary tournament so far. Way too biased toward the batters. The impact player rule is terrible. I don’t think I’ve seen a ball swing once. Hasn’t been much spin either. The fielding, as usual, from most of the locals has been abysmal.

I am enjoying the tournament westigersbob, not every match is a winner, but there have been some crackers, and the game is slowly evolving. It's fucking T20 cricket, the equivalent of baseball, the impact sub rule is awesome, and adds twists, rather than subtracting them, in my humble opinion of course. Good bowling and canny captainship can still win matches. Still, it can get a bit much and rather formulaic after a while. A lot of batters have really worked on their game since the last tournament. The IPL is not test cricket, but it will do for now. Tonight's game was a dud, though, so I watched the marvellous French flick * THE TASTE OF THINGS - starring the lovely Juliet Binoche, instead. Good film, but don't see it on an empty stomach, you will get the munchies for sure. It's deliciously romantic. Watched the last two rounds of the Masters at Augusta as well recently, that was a blast. *

It's as simple as missing the start of the tournament and being too far behind to really care about catching up. Having 277 plays 246 games hasn't added to my interest. I notice Ttavis Head scored a century off 39 balls the other night. Is that still impressive? I'll probably follow the knock out stages.

And what about Chamari Athapaththu? 195no to lead a chase of 302 for Sri Lanka v South Africa! Proteas skipper Laura Wolvaardt capped off a fair series (334 runs at 334) with 184no. Very few would have predicted that would be eclipsed.

jeffersoncody2 things make a T20 game good. A genuine contest between bat and ball, and tension in the run chase. There has not been a game I’ve seen yet that has had both. The chase RR pulled off (or more likely Jos Buttler pulled off) against KKR looked on the surface to be a great game, but RR batted themselves into trouble and should’ve won much easier, and KKR although scoring 223, were probably 25-30 short of a competitive total. It was poor batting by both sides really. And golf is a good walk ruined. If there was 100 different sports available to watch concurrently, I reckon golf would be 98th or worse in that list for mine.
