New English Library was a publishing company that took up a large portion of my teenage years with their pulp exploitation titles commanding the paperback shelves of WH Smiths with their trashy covers. The Rats was a huge hit.

Yeah, James Herbert was yuge while I was at school.
Never read any of his books myself though. He was no Garth Marenghi!
Funnily enough I just watched the movie Willard (1971) which was about killer rats.

The Rats is the only book of his read that I read but, in case people start thinking I had high literary standards, I did read far too many Edge books.

One popular author at school was Sven Hassel. Although I didn’t read any of his books personally.

I love the old Flashman series covers. Oddly tawdry and classy at the same time, and even got the likes of Frank Frazetta at the height of his career as one of the illustrators. The same could be said for some of the old 'Angelique' series paperbacks: The newest Flashman covers, OTH, look to be boringly correct, unsurprisingly. Haven't seen an Angelique volume in years, so those I couldn't say.

The Flasgman books are great. Top writing full of historical tidbits. The same could be said of the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey-Maturin books (though they're considerably less racy); they actually make a neat adjunct to Jane Austen's works, considering Austen had two brothers in the Navy at that time period depicted, and the fair level of knowledge she displayed about it, albeit subtly, in her novels. I still always laugh myself silly at Rik Mayall's crazed spoof of old Flash in Blackadder.

I myself own a rare copy of a New English Library edition of The Rats. This is the cover:

As someone born under the sign of Cancer I approve of this… Not familiar with this writer. I looked him up on Wikipedia and found out Night Of The Crabs spawned 11 sequels!

Although the Skinhead books were pretty rough the covers were relatively mild.
