And another one for the bingo card with people whingeing about Katy Perry doing pre game entertainment at the AFL Grand Final. Firstly, while I'm not a fan of Perry, I don't like the commentary around her being a 3rd rate star. If you've sold out stadium tours all over the world, you're a pretty big deal. Were they expecting Dua Lipa? Taylor Swift?
Secondly the idea that this matters at all. I couldn't care less who the entertainment is at either Grand Final. I might watch the NRL entertainment (if I'm not out buying a pizza) because it's between games. At midday Saturday I simply have better things to do than watch some bloviating dickheads hype up a game I've well and truly made up my mind whether it interests me or not a week before it started with occasional music interludes.
And lastly the idea that it has to be an Australian act: I don't care. I guarantee you old mate Brady will sing "Up There Cazaly" and Mark Seymour singing "Holy Grail" every year until they're both dead. If I want to watch Aussies singing there's plenty of it anyway! Just fuck off with this ridiculous, obnoxious, redundant horse shit every year.

😩 10 unanswered goals! Christ, that’s pitiful. We had an answer: 12 consecutive misses! Real question is whether this is a single bad year or the end of an era. Pendlebury plays his 400th next week. Jock Riley must have been turning in his grave. Or he would have done if he wasn’t a fictional character!

Thank you Port. Thank you Port. Thank you Port. Now we just need Brisbane, GWS or Freo to win and Carlton are out of 2nd.

Brisbane and Freo both win to push Carlton down to 4th. GWS were 4th when they led Melbourne by 27 points in the last quarter, but only won by 2 pushing their percentage just behind Carlton's. Essendon got flogged by St Kilda and could well be out of the 8 by tomorrow if Western Bulldogs win at the SCG or Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval.
Roosters moved back into the top 4 with a narrow win over Manly in a fun one. Sharks lost in Townsville to show, once again, that they're not fair dinkum. Not much of a round apart from tonight's game. Canberra and the Bunnies in an elimination final tomorrow. Panthers should beat us and really no excuses for the Dolphins either who are playing the Titans.

Scott Pendlebury celebrates 400 games by signing on for a 20th season next year. He's seen 7 Carlton coaches and never played in a season Essendon won a final. Can we make it an 8th Blues coach by the time he finishes up? If Carlton miss finals this year it could happen!

Tigers lose again, this time to the Cowboys. A season that started with much promise, is rapidly spiralling into a third straight wooden spoon.

I might not have seen it from the right angle, but I would have thought a penalty for high contact and move on. Some good tries near the end too.

A miss after the siren by McGovern allowed Collingwood to win by 3 points in Pendlebury's 400th. Only the 6th player to get there and the first magpie.
Port didn't need a kick after the siren to beat a pathetic Sydney. The Power already had 71 on the board before the Swans scored and won by 112. They are currently 2nd on the ladder and, unless GWS really thump Hawthorn, won't be any lower than 5th by the end of the round.
The mighty Dragons won in Melbourne for, I think, the first time this century (pretty sure they said it had been 25 years on the commentary). Led most of the game. Were holding on desperately towards the end but a win's a win. Sharks flogged Souths (they're done now surely, so no Albo in the NRL Finals though he's been insta-ing every time an Australian farts at the Olympics so I'm sure he'll find other stadiums to sit in the month of september). Titans belted Brisbane. If Wests Tigers were anything but a dumpster fire then last year's Grand Finalists (24-8 ahead in that Grand Final about an hour in) would be in prime spot for the wooden spoon.

Just saw the highlights from Port/ Swans game and the crowd was eerie from about halfway through the 2nd quarter. You'd think with the home team completely destroying a top of the table opponent the atmosphere would have been ecstatic, but Port fans stopped enjoying it well before half time and just went into politely clapping home goals between long periods of near silence.

I think it’s the first time EVER the Dragons have won in Melbourne. Souths and Brisbane are cooked for 2024, some experts having that as a GF quinella. The real eye opener is that both the Titans and Dragons can make the finals, with not bad draws including playing each other. Tigers need a miracle to avoid the spoon, although we do have a bye, and we play Parra in round 27.

Penrith beat Newy in a pretty ordinary contest, but one that once again highlighted how overbearing and unneeded the bunker truly is. On at least 3 occasions, Adam Gee the referee had a correct instinctive call, only for the video ref to intervene and get it wrong.
In the other game, the Bulldogs outlasted Canberra at a heaving Belmore that once again franks the primacy of suburban football grounds.
Next week, a tale as old as time in what will be an absolute cracker. Red v Blue. Local rivals, local fans. Dragons v Bulldogs at Kogarah.

In the AFL, it was a tale of two comebacks. GWS storming into the top 4 overcoming a 28 point deficit with a 7 goals to 2 withering burst against a Hawthorn team who've been red hot for about 3 months. In the meantime Fremantle crashed out of the top 4 when they blew a 25 point lead to the ice cold, barely won a game in months, Essendon.
Sets up a huge game at the Gabba next week, Brisbane hosting the Giants, which could decide top 2 and the premiership among other things. Sydney hosting Collingwood has become a big game. Swans have to win to stay top, Pies have to win to stay on life support.

The draws have made it even more interesting. Might be a really handy 2 points, could be 2 pts short…..

Those two looking very hard to best. Everyone else is either up and down or just down. If a Port, Freo or GWS can scramble into the top 2 that changes things. Swans abd Blues look strictly like making the numbers. Not even top 2 would make me think Sydney are a premiership chance. In the NRL I've gotta go with Penrith v Roosters, but it is a long way out...

Dustin Martin retires effective immediately. 302 games, 338 goals, 3 premierships, 3 Norm Smith's, a Brownlow, a League MVP. Famously swept the individual awards (Brownlow, Norm Smith, League MVP, Coaches MVP) in 2017. One of the all time greats and probably the greatest Tiger in either code. Some Balmain players have been pretty special, but no one in Dusty's class.
Ton Hawkins also says farewell, but may play again this season. Currently sitting on 796 goals from 359 games. 4 premierships and the 2020 Coleman. Jack Hawkins' baby boy surpassed his father well and truly and is one of the great forwards of his (admittedly anaemic) era.
