Just finished watching the opening ceremony, on tape delay and fast-forwarding through some bits. Wow, I was impressed. Great idea to do it in the city and not in a stadium. It worked out really well! Of course Paris is Paris, I don’t know if there is any other city in the world where the same concept would have worked so well. And that ending with Céline Dion singing Edith Piaf from the Eiffel Tower! I am by no means a fan of Céline Dion, but I had goosebumps! Canada's women's football team penalised for spying on their first opponents (New Zealand) with a drone. Two staff members sent home before the opening game!
Canada's coach has been dismissed over the scandal. There is talk of Canada's medals in past games being rescinded (Canada won gold in Tokyo). I guess there is some indication that this was not an isolated incident? That would be a shame. And all for what? A slight advantage over New Freaking Zealand? Canada now punished with six points(!) which I guess means that even if we win all group matches we will not advance. |

France and Fiji battling for Gold in Men’s Rugby Sevens now. That was a quick tournament! France beats the two-time defending champions and takes the Gold. I like this sport! It is short and fast and exciting. Pity (for me) that Canada plays all its games in the annual international tournament all the way out west - I would gladly go see it live if there were games here in Montreal or even in Ottawa. |

Fuck the tv coverage.
So the Matildas looked like being bundled out of the womens soccer after a 3-0 drubbing by Germany.
Zambia was a hope except for being 5-2 down 10 minutes into the 2nd half. After 3 substitutes they finally managed 6-5 and only Team USA with their new coach Emma Hayes to go.
But as there were no Australians in it, no need to broadcast the USA Germany game which went 4-1.
I confidently expect there will be no tv of the climbing final because there will be no Australians.
