Probably not the best thread to follow in from, but yet another boneheaded game from the Tigers makes me question my sanity. No other team in either code knows how to win 80% of a game and still lose like Wests Tigers. And I regret watching the Swans v Freo game. The w⚓️’s were very poor…. Given the Dockers had just found out about McCarthy the day of the game, you can understand them being a bit flat. They're only men after all. The Dragons won! If there's one thing I can say about this team: they win the games they should. Sadly they also get belted in games they should lose. Anyway. We'll beat the bye next week (who wants to play in Brisbane anyway?) and will have a respectable 12 points from 11 rounds. Big result was Cronulla defeating Melbourne. Given their "barometer" status they needed a scalp and got one. And with Cleary's injury: I expect NSW to not only lose, but suck, in Origin every year so him missing isn't a problem. He'll be fit and firing by finals tine for a tilt at a 4peat.

A Sunday of fairly meaningless games in both codes apart from the last one: a virtual elimination final between Adelaide and Brisbane. An absolute banger with 13 lead changes which ended in a draw.

Unfortunately for moi, Mothers Day is a football free zone. So I saw nothing except score updates.
I hope that the AFL don’t bow to pressure and do a GP/ET thing to eliminate draws, at least not in the regular season.
Dragons are doing well. The best they can hope for though is to sneak into the 8 and win in Week 1. Tigers are hopeful of not finishing bottom 4. 13th would be an achievement.

LOL at the Blues halfback situation. Currently so bereft of options they're talking about Jerome Luai or Matt Burton playing there. It really should be Nicho (if fit), but tbh I don't care. Play Moses again if you want. We've lost 16 series in the last 20 years. I have little doubt we'll make it 17 out of 21. The natural order has been well and truly set.

Interesting to monitor the current situations with concussion in the football coded. 18yo Bulldog Aiden O' Driscoll became the fourth player this year to be medically retired due to concussion. NRL has had retirements brought on by this too, but typically doesn't advertise it.
James Graham and Peter Fitzsimmons have been going at it in the media, specifically over James Tedesco. I think they both need to pull their heads in a bit. James: playing football is not more important than protecting your brain. Peter: you don't actually know better than trained medical staff who retired a 2x premiership captain just 3 years ago. But it seems they only ever want to talk to "let them play regardless" or "retire anyone who gets a head knock" types.

Roosters pull their offer for Fifita and he's staying a Titan. Better pay for half the work. Makes sense. Sure there's more to it though...

I get the impression that young David is pretty easily convinced of things. The rumour I’m hearing is that initially Fifita was very keen on joining Penrith, and had more or less agreed personally, but his agent put the brakes on when the Roosters came crowing. His agent convinced him the Chooks were his team, but Dessie and Titans convinced him personally to stay…. Uncle Nick was none too impressed and made it where Fifita, and his agent, had only one choice left by pulling his offer….

I've been thinking for a while that if you want to see the Blues win something: watch the girls. The Blues do it easily. 22-12. Though it might have been very different had one of the QLD girls not lost the ball when she was diving over the line for a try that would brought them within 4. Doubt we'll see anything like that from the fellas.
In the AFL, GC17 continued their love affair with Darwin thrashing Geelong by the delightfully late 90s-early 00s scoreline of 164-100. Surely I'm not the only one who remembers every game at the SCG or Docklands having that kind of scoreline at one stage?

One of my earliest Aussie Rules memories was watching a highlights something when I was a kid (so 80’s or early 90’s) and a panel were talking about how the SGC was too small for VFL (yep) Footy. Drew Morphett (alongside Sandy Roberts my favourite commentator of AFL) made 2 very salient points I felt. 1) When has more goals ever lead to a worse game; and 2) “You’ve still got to kick ‘em straight. The team which kicks straighter will invariably win”. 30+ years on, and Drew is still 100% correct.

Funny watching him on old episodes of The Winners rocking a side mullet. He was also an excellent cricket commentator on ABC in his twilight years. Eventually made redundant by Auntie in 2014, 3 years later Drew sat down to watch a Friday night game with a glass of red and his heart stopped. While you'd like to be 10-15 years older that's not a bad way to go. Sandy's probably the greatest AFL commentator for iconic calls. "He sets sale for home!" "Ablett! Here's the magician at work! He shoots from 45...what more can you say?" and most famously "Carlton! Carlton are in to the Grand Final!" I wonder who the Rugby League equivalent would be? Probably Rabs by default because he did it so long and what came before him (on channel 10) was so shit. Did spend a lot of time sucking Phil Gould's cock in the 2000s though.

Rabs was the main man, and you’re right about what came prior. Rex Mossop was such a bloviator and utterly convinced of his own superiority over everything and everyone else. Graham Hughes was equally bad, and adding to the shittery was Bill Anderson on the sideline with 2 types of one liners - bleedingly obvious or completely clueless.
Channel 9’s NRL commentary today is just as bad, and in some cases worse. Gus is past it, Thurston isn’t up to it, Freddy neither and Joey is far too muzzled. And that’s without the worst of all time - SBW….. I don’t know who their play by play guys are - they’re all inferior though.
Fox is far superior - Smith, Voss and Ginane are all excellent play by play guys, and some of their colour guys are also top shelf. They do have a
Triple M do a good job, the Grahams Wade and Jimmy both really good, and there is a bright future for Aaron Woods and Josh Reynolds.
ABC goes good too - Andrew Moore is great, and the QLD guys led by Quentin Hull go alright too.
2GB has been awful since Hadley stopped doing football, which says a lot.

Yeah, Quentin Hull is great. I'm surprised no commercial radio network's made a play for him.
Absolute belter top of the table clash yesterday. Nicho Hynes basically said "Yep. I'm the Blues half back for Game One." I know it's only May, but have Cronulla got their shit together? This is not a game they would have won, or even been close in, last year or the year before.
Titans are bloody unlucky again. Two tight games on Friday night too. Magic Round is delivering.
In the AFL I feel for Adem Yze. I was happy for him when he got the Richmond job last year, but now after being outscored by 210 points in the last fortnight, he may not last the year out. Swans made my week thrashing Carlton and tipping them out of the 8. De Goey kicked a late winner for Collingwood against Adelaide which was overshadowed by what looked an absurd free kick against Rankin for running too far.

Warriors outlast the Panthers. The crucial period was when Isaah Yeo got sent to the bin and Warriors scored 12 points. Without that, the Panthers win fairly easily.
I’m really worried my Tigers might get a touch up from the Dolphins this evening.

I just saw the Rankine free - apparently it’s 24 metres but it looked a really harsh call.
As a casual AFL fan, that call would make me worried. Methinks a flood of run too far frees are upon us all…..

Not a touch up for the Tigers but another loss. Melbourne have a poor loss in the Perth to the Weagles. Rookie sensation Harley Reid best on ground. Port scored 2 goals in the final 30 seconds to defeat Hawthorn by a point.
Hopefully the Wahs can take some momentum from the Panthers win as they've been very disappointing thus far. Excellent round of football in the NRL. Magic round is a great concept and, more importantly, delivers great matches more often than not.
