Wow! I initially assumed that the ship was too tall to pass under the bridge, but it is much worse than that. How the hell did that happen? I have never steered a boat that wasn’t powered by pedals or oars, but I can’t imagine it would be so hard for a professional boat driver person to avoid hitting a pillar.

It's crazy that a bridge could collapse like that. It looks flimsy in the photo but unless ships are getting heavier you'd think bridges would be designed to withstand this type of event. It’s basic entropy. It was not repaired and maintained properly and sat over a sea salt harbor. People underestimate the damage salt does.

Easy on the nautical terms, dude! Not all of us went to Annapolis!

People underestimate the damage salt does. Or 50,000 tons of steel hitting something. Cars in my area suffer a certain amount of damage from the salt air. And the undercarriage of cars in places that salt their roads. The comment was amazement the bridge couldn't take a hit by a boat, but maintenance has been put off by a lot of government entities. Yearly maintenance becomes every 2 yrs or more. Look at the flooding that hit parts of San Diego because the city delayed cleaning of storm drains. Our roads are full of potholes the city claims it can't fix because they don't know where they are. (Just drive, City workers. You'll hit several). I first became aware of the problem around the 00s when a military plane crashed into a residential neighborhood, killing a woman, her newborn, & her mom visiting from another country. The plane was in need of repairs, but under a plan put in place to save money under W regular maintenance was pushed out months. (Say an oil change which should have been done at 4 month intervals was stretched to 6 or 8 month intervals). The plane in question was unable to be repaired at North Island so was on the way to Miramar when it crashed in Clairemont. But this is where most governments seem to have ended up. Spacing out required work to save money. This bridge thing does sound crazy, though. How did the boat not see the pillar? The person steering fall asleep? I'm hearing it was dark. SO DONT TRY IT. Don't they tell drivers not to drive if the conditions are bad?

Like the Sunshine Skyway in the 80's. Didn't this bridge have "dolphins", concrete and steel platforms guarding the supports?

I swear that breaks my heart, especially considering that’s in my “backyard.” I myself have been over it a few times. Loved looking at Ft. Carroll. From video footage I saw, the ship lost power twice prior to striking the bridge. Still needs serious investigation. And there were vehicles in motion during the collapse. Makes me think of the Hotel collapse in Florida a couple of years back. Thoughts and prayers to all involved. Side note, I hope the take a close look at the Bay Bridge!
